Greetings Vampires.

After many sacrifices, hideous experiments, and glorious blood rituals, the mad warlocks from the crypts of Stunlock Studios are proud to bring you our first major content update: Secrets of Gloomrot.

On the day of V Rising’s Early Access release, our project had around 43,000 revisions, and today, it has over 57,000. We’re proud to bring you this first massive landmark on our journey to the full release of V Rising. We are still ongoing in development, and this is by no means a finished product, but we hope this shows our dedication to realizing the full potential of our villainous vampire game.

Below you’ll find the full patch notes, collected and organized to the best of our ability. A few little things might be missed here and there in those 14,000 revisions, but this should give a solid idea of the changes you’ll be experiencing.

Be aware that there WILL BE SPOILERS in these patch notes. You may want to avoid any extremely detailed lists contained here-in, but in general it will be very difficult to avoid spoiling anything.

Happy reading, happy hunting, and see you all in Gloomrot!

General Optimization

Several systems in the engine have been reworked and restructured to enable all new features in this patch as well as to generally improve performance and stability.  There may be new types of issues for specific hardware that can arise due to these massive changes but in general, the game should run better on the vast majority of setups.

When starting/joining a game for the first time we now pre-warm a number of shaders. This will result in a longer loading time during this first startup. This change should lead to a lot fewer stutters/freezes when encountering new content (units, spells, etc) for the first time.

The experience of connecting to servers with a lot of players should be improved due to many optimizations regarding networked objects. There are now fewer objects being synced when you connect to a server and as a result, you will be able to start playing quicker.

The responsiveness of certain spells and abilities has been reduced due to removing frame delays when reacting to objects/spells being spawned or destroyed, thus making combat overall more fluent and responsive.

Territories and Multiple Floors

Players may now freely build staircases allowing you to build a castle on multiple floors. Players may build up to 3 floors or 4 floors in areas that have terrain height differences. This is the default server setting but may be increased up to 6 floors on private servers.

Major parts of the world have been updated with new topology to support multiple floors as well as a new way of claiming your land through the Territory system. You no longer claim land by placing individual borders but instead claim the entirety of a region by placing your Castle Heart in the available space.

The intention with this change is to:

  1. Ensure that players always get the room they need to progress and build a castle that can store all their stations and loot.
  2. Block players from intentionally griefing other players by surrounding them with floors/walls.
  3. Avoid scenarios where multiple players unintentionally build in the same area effectively blocking each other from progressing later in the game when everyone needs more space.
  4. Improve PvP scenarios where players could build multiple lines of defenses in a single area and could build an army of servants making it almost impossible to raid.
  5. Better communicate the land availability of a server to players before they join. It will be easier to avoid servers that have too little space to build.
  6. Improve the Map UI to better display what areas are claimed and what areas are free as well as what players/clans are occupying a given space.

Territories also pave the way for a number of possible expansions/improvements for the future. This addition is a stepping stone towards something more.

Additional changes to better support territories / multiple floors:

  • Borders have been replaced with a new type of ‘Rough Floor’ in the early game.
  • Players may now place most castle structures without a floor requirement within their territory.
  • All floors regardless if exterior/interior will generate a roof once a room is enclosed.
  • All framework assets (walls, windows, doors, wallpapers, pillars, floors) have been redone and updated to work with multiple floors. This includes an additional version of all walls/pillars when stacked on top of one another.
  • Multiple floors introduce a new maximum height for objects/framework – Many objects have been altered and reshaped to fit the new sizing model.
  • Stairs placeable in slopes have been removed and replaced with general staircases usable both in slopes as well as anywhere in your territory to build multiple floors.
  • Line of Sight has been reworked from a 2D line of sight to a 3D line of sight, the system that determines what units/spells your character may or may not see on the screen.
  • AI pathfinding has been reworked from a 2D solution to a 3D solution to allow units and servants to navigate between floors.
  • Fading of objects in front of the camera has been reworked. Objects now fade more smoothly and in front of units to allow you to always see your enemy. Floors in the castle fade depending on your player position to always ensure that you can see the objects on the floors you are currently standing on.
  • Border visualization added when in the build menu.
  • Default Dismantle refund changed to 100% from 75% to better allow players to reshape their castle as well as reducing the penalty for moving to a new territory.

Castle and Building

Build Menu

The build menu has been updated with a new layout, functionality and with better categorization of objects to allow players to more easily navigate the menu and build their castle.

Dyeable Objects

Select objects can now be dyed in different colors. This includes torches, carpets, windows, select furniture, and more. Changing the color of an item does not cost any extra material. You may also edit the color of objects placed in your castle via a color wheel.

Modular Objects

Some objects such as planters, trellises, vases, and flowers are now more modular allowing you to place one object on top of another to fuse them.

Workstations

  • Jewelcrafting Table has been renamed to Artisan Table for crafting Magic Sources.
  • A new “Jewelcrafting Table” has been added allowing you to craft Spell Jewels.
  • Fabricator – A new refinement station for assembling materials.
  • Leatherworking station – A station for crafting bags and saddles.
  • Ancestral Forge – A station for restoring ancient legendary vampire weapons.

Growing Plots

Planting seeds now requires a growing plot. A number of growing plots of varying sizes and looks are now available for both interior and exterior use.

Abandon Castle

By interacting with the Castle Heart, players may now abandon their castle. Losing ownership puts the castle in decay. This will be useful when moving to new territory on servers with castle limitations and/or when you just want to get rid of your castle.

Expose Castle

By interacting with their own Castle Heart, players may now expose a castle for up to 5 minutes. Any player may claim the castle when it is exposed (the current owner as well). Useful to transfer ownership of a castle from one player to another.

Castle Levels

The castle heart may now be upgraded up to level 5 from the previous maximum, level 4. The default bonuses for each level are as follows:

  • Level 1
    • 40 Floor Tiles
    • 4 Servant Coffins
    • 500 Blood Essence limit
  • Level 2
    • 100 Floor Tiles
    • 5 Servant Coffins
    • 1000 Blood Essence limit
  • Level 3
    • 180 Floor Tiles
    • 6 Servant Coffins
    • 1500 Blood Essence limit
  • Level 4
    • 260 Floor Tiles
    • 7 Servant Coffins
    • 2000 Blood Essence limit
  • Level 5
    • 420 Floor Tiles
    • 8 Servant Coffins

PvP Castle Raiding

With the addition of territories and multiple floors, we’ve added additional features to improve and balance PvP Castle Raiding.

New Castle Raid Feature – “Disable Defenses”

To avoid scenarios where players build massive snake-like labyrinths across multiple floors to stash away their treasures and to block any attempt of a raid, we’ve added a new castle heart interaction to discourage certain castle designs and honeycomb builds (at least on your second and third floor).

The win condition for Castle PvP will be mostly about reaching the Castle Heart on the bottom floor (similar to servers that allow destruction and/or conquering of enemy castles using keys).

With this addition, we also hope that players will be more encouraged to use their additional build space to build a more convenient space on their second and third floors.

By reaching a player’s castle heart on a normal PvP server players may now temporarily disable the castle defenses for 10 minutes by spending one castle key of the correct level. In this state, the following occur:

  1. Enemy players may use paired teleporters inside the enemy castle
  2. All walls, doors, pillars, entrance barriers, and windows become immaterial allowing players to simply walk through them.
  3. All chests/storage can be instantly looted without a cast time
  4. The Owner/Clan may not respawn in coffins inside the castle
  5. The Owner/Clan may not use waygates to/from the castle
  6. Servants can not respawn
  7. Temporarily reduces the health of all structures within the castle

This action has a cooldown of 30 minutes to discourage players from re-triggering this state over and over again for griefing purposes.

Travel and Target Area Ability Reworks

To improve the game feel and to ensure that PvP within castles is more balanced we’ve reworked how travel spells and target AoEs function (especially around the castle).

Travel spells now visually allow players to travel the full height regardless if there’s a floor above you or not within a castle – you will however land on the current floor that you are aiming at.

You can use travel spells across railings allowing you to jump from one floor to another or between floors on the same floor. You can however never jump from a lower floor to an upper floor (unless you are standing in a staircase).

All target area spells are blocked by railings to prevent players from attacking enemies from an upper floor to a lower level floor.

Diminishing Returns

There are now diminishing returns on crowd control effects in PvP affecting Freeze, Incapacitate, and Fear. Each time a player is hit by a crowd control effect the duration is reduced. The player may become immune if hit by several effects in a short amount of time. The immunity wears out after 10s.

Additional PvP Updates

  • You can no longer perform servant actions such as Summon or Revive while “Castle is under attack.
  • Destroying wooden palisades and doors now triggers Breach
  • Soul shards may only be placed on the first floor similar to castle hearts.
  • Servant maximum health reduced by 25-30%
  • Siege golem size has been reduced and attack animations adapted to fit within the new castle height boundaries.
  • Siege golem now has an additional support roar ability to shield nearby allies (only vampires not affecting golems)

  • Siege golem health server settings updated to 750/1000/1250/1750/2500 from 500/750/1000/1500/2500. Default Siege Golem health is now set to 1250.
  • Siege Golem ranged attack no longer travel across cliffs/abysses
  • Explosives, Siege Golems and Castle Key items can no longer be picked up from the ground while under the effect of Veil of Illusion (to block possible raid exploits)
  • Increased radius of Tier 2 Explosive boxes from 4.5 to 6.

This change allows players to more clearly see units and objects on top of ramps/stairs thus reducing the advantage players may have when defending a castle or a slope.

The world of Vardoran is getting bigger and to better allow players to travel to different destinations we’ve increased the useability of some travel mechanics.

  • Improved vampire animations for attacks when using the Mace or the Slashers weapon
  • The share blood mechanic has updated animations.
  • The Crossbow weapon effects have been replaced with more physical-looking effects instead of poisonous effects to fit better with the overall physical theme of weapons.
  • Several icons have been updated and/or replaced. Including icons for items, spells, recipes, minimap, and keybinds.
  • Wind has been added to the game, giving vegetation a more realistic appearance when in motion.

Vampire Voices

Vampire voices have been added for the male and female versions. Vampire voices add a layer of feedback for specific interactions and triggers and should help the player to better understand certain actions, triggers, limits, errors, and events.

Vampire voices can be turned off in the Options menu.

Multiplayer Scaling – Units and Loot

To improve the balance and to generally make combat feel good and rewarding when fighting both solo and together with a group we have reworked the system that scales enemy health.

Enemy units now scale more dynamically, increasing and decreasing in health as players join, die, or leave a fight.

Unit scaling now also includes normal units and not only V Bloods.

Fighting together should be both fun and rewarding, units killed will now also have a chance to drop additional loot that scales with the number of players. With these changes, we hope to incentivize players to keep playing together rather than to visit different locations solo.

Using allied buffs from afar on a player fighting a unit will now trigger health scaling as if that player was also participating in the fight.

Items and Loot

New Weapon Types

The player may now unlock access to two new weapon types, The Greatsword, and the Dual Pistols. Recipes are unlocked by defeating specific V Blood bosses detailed in the ‘Progression Update’ section.

Spell Jewels

Players may now find and craft ‘Jewels’ adding additional perks to a spell. You can equip one jewel on each of the 36 standard abilities (including veils) but not for ultimate spells. The number of available modifications for each spell differs between 5-10 depending on the spell. Each perk can come in varying strengths.

There are three tiers of jewels, each tier adds one additional perk to the spell up to a total of three (3). Each tier increases the possible roll for the perk modifiers as well.

Jewels will drop from units, and breakables and can be found in chests, storages, and treasure chests.

Ancestral Weapons

Players may now find, craft and restore ancestral weapons using the ‘Ancestral Forge’. Ancestral Weapons can be obtained at tier 6 and tier 8. Ancestral Weapons add an additional weapon level along with additional secondary stats that are randomized. An ancestral weapon also modifies the ‘Q’ ability of your weapon so that it applies to one of the six spell school effects when striking an enemy.

Magic Sources

Most magic sources have been updated with new art for icons and with new names for more consistency. The secondary stat bonuses of T6+ Magic sources have been rebalanced.

T7+ Magic Sources now always reduce blood drain by 15%

The ‘Blood Key’ Magic source has had its level reduced to the same level as T8 magic sources and now instead grants +25% Blood Drain reduction and +75 Sun Resistance. This item is intended to be more a symbol of power for completing all Journal Quests (for now…), not a contender for best magic source. The overlay effect of having this item equipped has been toned down.

Weapons and Armor

Crossbows are no longer crafted from Woodworking Table, Crossbows are now crafted in the same manner as all other weapon types.

Set Bonuses and Gear Level have been tweaked for some weapons and armor sets most notably:

  • Dark Silver Weapons now grant Gear Level 23 (+5 from Merciless Iron Weapons)
  • Dawn Thorn Set now has double Gear Level Set bonuses (Increasing total Gear Level by +6 for wearing the entire set)
  • Bloodmoon Set speed bonus reduced to 4% from 6%

To balance out the additional power and generally increased damage from the additions of Ancestral Weapons and Jewels in PvP, the total amount of health granted by armors has been significantly increased (primarily towards the end game sets). Damage output from units in PvE has been tuned to not offset the PvE balance. Generally, these balance changes will result in a bit bigger numbers for health and damage across the board, more noticeable in the endgame.

Repair Costs

Weapons and Armors now lose less durability when used (about ~25% less).

In PvP (when killed by another player) all equipped items now lose 12.5% durability and are dropped upon death resulting in a more exact match corresponding to repair costs. (i.e picking up the items should allow you to repair the lost 12.5%, previously a lot of items did mismatch between repairs and item drops which should no longer be the case).

Bags

Players may now craft bags of various types allowing you to carry more items. Additional bag recipes are unlocked as you progress through the game.

  • Small / Medium / Large sized bags allowing players to carry 3/5/7 additional items
  • Bags are limited to different categories of items
    • Herbs, Seeds and Flower Bag
    • Research / Book Bag
    • Gem Bag
    • Purse for coins

Materials and Refinement

There are a number of new materials and several changes to refinement recipes as well as visual updates to lots of icons for both items and recipes. This section outlines the biggest changes and additions.

The stacksize for several items have been updated, most items now have a higher stack size.

The crafting and refinement time for several items has been reduced or greatly reduced.

A lot of crafting recipes have been updated as well. In general a lot of changes aim to tune the entire journey from early to end game in a way where we remove item bottlenecks, diversify the locations you need to visit to gather items and to nail a good pace for player progression.
